Illuminated OnesNovel Midnight in a Perfect World

Why we are here:

The world is on the cusp of change. It is up to us to determine whether we will adapt to this change or succumb to it. Humanity balances its drive to innovate between its cooperative nature and the act of war. In the past, this served to alternately push society ahead through technological advance and halt it, building up civilizations before driving it into the abyss for centuries at a time. This cycle of destruction is unnecessary, brought on by pointless competition for resources due to selfish and shortsighted mismanagement. Today, the consequences are more dire, the destruction more thorough, but we now have the technological capacity and wisdom to do what our ancestors could not-manage a single global economy. The citizens of the world's economic powers are all guilty of over-indulgence in luxury supplied by ever-shrinking reserves of finite resources at the expense of the poor nations, fueling an increasing population of ever-greater consumers, while converting those resources into toxic materials. If this continues unabated, the earth will become uninhabitable and shrug us off as it has so many species before. But before that happens, the suffering in the world will become more unimaginable. As oil, food, and water becomes more scarce, violence and anarchy will increase. What has begun in the poorest countries will spread to the places that see themselves as immune. Consequently, being more reliant on these resources, the rich nations will be least able to handle the loss and their complete collapse will leave a power vacuum that will result in anarchy and widespread death and destruction as it has so many times before. We have the power to enact change, but we must act quickly and we must work together. Pointless and petty squabbles over perceived differences and stubborn adherence to ancient prejudices and superstition need to be thrown aside as we recognize the true similarities within. The rich will have to sacrifice some of their riches, the poor will have to sacrifice some of their freedom to overly reproduce, but we will all be better in the end, living in a world of sustainable technology and agriculture with a stable population. Together, we can evolve as a society and usher in a New World Order of balance or fail to adapt and collapse into a new dark age that our species may not be able to recover from.

It is up to you. United we stand, divided we fall.
